Sussex v Yorkshire – County Championship Division 2 Preview

Sussex host Yorkshire in the County Championship encounter at the 1st Central County Ground on 20th April.

The hosts will be looking to make it two wins from two after they defeated Durham in the opening game of the season.

Yorkshire on the other hand need to bounce back from a shock opening defeat to Leicestershire at Headingly while their second match was washed out against Gloucestershire last week.

Tipped to go straight back up after their relegation to Division Two last year, they did not expect to find themselves bottom of the table with two games gone.

The match will feature two batsmen who have hit the ground running this season; Dawid Malan scored 132 in Yorkshire’s first innings against Leicestershire, while Cheteshwar Pujara hit 115 in his first innings for Sussex. Both players will be influential to the result.

Malan’s hope of a Test match return for the Ashes seem feint, however he may be facing England Test bowler Ollie Robinson who has been named in the Sussex squad.

A good showing against England’s quick may push him up the pecking order in Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum’s plans if replacements are needed nearer the time.

This will be the last appearance of Shai Hope’s short spell at Yorkshire, he will hope to go out with a bang after impressing with 83 in the second innings against Leicestershire.

Pujara will have to contend with Dom Bess whose last appearance for Yorkshire at Hove in 2021 ended with second innings figures of 6 for 53.
